World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) AI alarm bells: Over 100 organizations are warning that a provision in the US government’s new tax and spending bill would block states from regulating artificial intelligence systems for ten years, potentially leaving harmful AI applications unchecked and unaccountable. The measure, backed by the Trump administration and facing criticism from advocacy groups and some tech leaders, must still pass further House and Senate votes before becoming law. This feels like the prequel of one of the Terminator movies - probably nothing!

2) Storm watch: A massive storm system is moving through the Midwest, with threats of floods and tornadoes. The Midwest was also JUST hit with serious storms that killed 19 people.

3) UnitedHealth collapse: UnitedHealth Group, one of America’s largest companies, is in crisis after CEO Andrew Witty resigned unexpectedly and the company withdrew its financial forecasts due to rising healthcare costs. The turmoil deepened after reports that UnitedHealth is under federal criminal investigation for possible Medicare fraud, causing its stock to lose half its value and prompting the return of former CEO Stephen Hemsley to stabilize the company. If you think the company has been in the news a lot, it’s because they have. Remember when the CEO of their UnitedHealthcare division was killed?

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) A kindergartener in Pennsylvania brought alcoholic Jell-O shots to school and shared them with at least three classmates, leading to a hospital visit for the children and an ongoing investigation by the school district and authorities. The wrong way to “start em young”.

2) A Rhode Island couple who ordered a $640 Trump-branded watch received one with the "T" missing, spelling "Rump" instead. Great mistake.

3) A man was allowed to use an 85-year-old ticket originally issued for Japan’s canceled 1940 World Expo to attend the 2025 Osaka World Expo, fulfilling a decades-old promise to ticket holders. A seriously long wait.
