World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) Amazon fuels AI hype: The e-commerce retail giant pumped another $4 billion into OpenAI competitor Anthropic. Despite this massive check, they will remain a minority investor. And Anthropic is looking to raise even more! Why do they need so much money? Between high salaries for engineers, the massive compute power needed, and the specialized hardware, AI is expensive business.

2) Nvidia also fuels AI hype: The chip manufacturer at the center of the AI boom, Nvidia, released their earnings last week and the results were great…but not mind-blowing. Their revenue continues to explode, but their CEO cautioned that the massive rate of growth may taper off a bit. The stock dropped slightly, but there’s no doubt that the AI train isn’t stopping for now.

3) Meanwhile…Google will be split up?: The U.S. Department of Justice has argued that the OG tech leader Alphabet (Google parent company) must sell Chrome, share data and search results with rivals, and possibly sell its Android smartphone software. The DoJ claims that Google had an illegal monopoly in the market. Chrome holds two-thirds of the global web browser market and drives about $88 billion in revenue for Alphabet annually.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) A man was caught trying to smuggle 320 tarantulas, 110 centipedes, and nine bullet ants out of Peru, all of which were strapped to his body. No thanks.

2) What trend is hotter than AI this year? Celebrity lookalike contests! Between Timothée Chalamet, Jeremy Allen White, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and many others, the contests are popping up everywhere. Let me know if a Steve Buscemi contest happens. I’m winning.

3) What’s an unreasonable price for a cup of coffee? In my mind, double-digits is crazy. What about triple-digits? That’s the cost for a Scottish cup, but it does come with shares in the company.

The Santa Rally

One month till Christmas! You know what that means? Time to invest!

The Santa Rally refers to the tendency of stock markets to experience a seasonal boost during the last week of December and the first few days of January. This phenomenon is often attributed to factors like holiday optimism, year-end tax planning, and lower trading volumes, which can create upward pressure on stock prices.

Investors also tend to reposition their portfolios for the new year, adding to the rally. Historically, this period has seen above-average returns, making it a much-anticipated event among traders and investors.

What performs best during the Santa Rally? Stocks, specifically ones focused on holiday spending and companies with strong positive momentum.

So here’s a few potential options:

  1. S&P500 ETF - an easy choice with the Vanguard ETF charging just 0.03%. This gives you broad exposure to the stock market and it’s been crushing it this year, up almost 26% so far.

  2. Consumer discretionary ETF - a bit more focused on holiday buying. Here’s a Blackrock ETF that is a bit more expensive at 0.41%, but it is more focused than the S&P500.

  3. Momentum ETF - this is focused on companies that have had strong recent performance, which has been a great place to invest this year - this Blackrock ETF is up almost 37%.

History

On this day…

…in 1783, General George Washington rode into New York City with nearly 800 American soldiers as the British forces evacuated for good. Later haters!
