Breakup

"We are never ever getting back together" - T Swift (also Musk and Trump to each other)

US and China will meet to (hopefully) repair their trade tussle.

Musk and Trump are now FORMER best friends.

The economy (somehow) isn’t doing too shabby.

People fling themselves down a hill to catch some cheese.

World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) US and China trade tiff: After Trump said that China “TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US” (his caps, not mine), he just tweeted (with caps lock off) that his team was meeting with Chinese officials in London to resume trade talks. Markets rebounded accordingly, with the S&P500 ending the week up 1.8% and just 2% off all-time-highs. This “will they won’t they” trade negotiation is giving me whiplash.

2) Musk and Trump break up: The bromance between Trump and Elon appears to be over, for the time being at least. Elon attacked the “Big Beautiful Bill” Trump was pushing forward, as he said it would massively accelerate the government’s debt. Trump said Musk was wearing thin and constantly on ketamine. Musk said Trump was all over the Epstein files. DRAMAAAA.

3) And the economy…is kind of okay: The US added 139,000 jobs in May, more than anticipated and the 53rd consecutive month that the US economy added jobs. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.2% and wage gains continued to outpace inflation. But don’t get too comfortable. Trade policy chaos and the impacts of DOGE make outlooks uncertain.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) To all of our thousands of readers in Trondheimsfjord off Byneset in Trondheim, you may have heard that your neighbour Johan had a 135m ship crash into his front yard. That WOULD happen to Johan.

2) It’s finally that time of year for my favorite extreme sport: The Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling. These brave souls chased a wheel of cheese down a basically vertical hill. No deaths, many injuries, one champion.

3) A vegetable sculpture contest featuring a squash that looks like Trump. Say less.

You like charts? Graphs? Ya you do

Shipping costs spiked as people looked to get ahead of tariffs and are about twice as high as long-term averages, but they’re still less than half the cost of the COVID peaks.

History

On this day…

…in 1928, Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew successfully completed the first trans-Pacific flight in the Fokker trimotor "Southern Cross". Departing from Oakland, California, on May 31st, they flew to Brisbane, Australia, with stops in Hawaii and Fiji. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon just 41 years later - insane.
