Top news stories of the past week

1) A bigly day for the Megabill: President Trump’s "Megabill" narrowly advanced in the Senate despite defections from two GOP senators. President Trump said on social media it was a "great victory" for his "great, big, beautiful bill." Kinda sounds like Borat. Among the provisions outlined in the Megabill are a $5 trillion increase in the federal debt ceiling, a $150 billion boost to military spending, cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs, and funding for immigration enforcement - including $46.5 billion for completing the border wall. Elon Musk has voiced criticism over the bill, stating that it would be “political suicide for the Republican Party.”

2) Mr. and Mrs. Bezos: Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez said “I do” in Venice this past weekend, hosting a wild wedding reportedly costing around $50 million. The guest list included Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ivanka Trump, and Oprah Winfrey (to name a few). Meanwhile, around 1,000 local protesters marched through the city, angry that their city was being taken over and saying if Bezos could afford this he could afford more tax. Local businesses and politicians, however, welcomed the celebration as a significant economic boost - Bezos did donate €3 million to local Venetian institutions after all. I guess my invite got lost in the mail? Rude!

3) Trump vs Canada: Last week, President Trump abruptly ended all trade negotiations with Canada after the country announced a new digital services tax targeting major American tech companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber, and Airbnb. Trump labeled the tax a “direct and blatant attack” on the U.S. economy and declared that talks would remain suspended until Canada dropped the tax. Which they just did!

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) Fifteen sets of twins will be graduating from the same high school in Long Island this year. I’m not saying it’s the water, but someone should probably definitely test the water.

2) Two bears escaped a UK wildlife park enclosure, devoured a 7-day supply of honey, and then fell asleep. Sounds like it was actually a 1-day supply of honey.

3) A New York City guide known as the “Rat Whisperer” is offering walking tours dedicated to learning about the city’s infamous rodents. No 🤗

When it comes to AI spending, the U.S. is leaving everyone else in the dust. Investment took off around 2016-2017, then skyrocketed after 2020 as tools like ChatGPT brought AI into the mainstream.

On this day…

…in 1908, a massive explosion, believed to be caused by a meteoroid or comet, flattened and scorched a vast area of Siberian forest, the largest impact event in recorded history.
