Top news stories of the past week
1) China & US make a deal: The United States and China have agreed to significantly reduce tariffs on each other's goods for 90 days after productive trade talks in Geneva, marking a major de-escalation in their ongoing trade war. While this is good news (yay), tariffs remain high and a permanent resolution is not guaranteed (boo).
2) UK & UK (also) make a deal: The UK and the US have reached a tariff deal that reduces or removes tariffs on some UK exports like cars, steel, and aluminum, but it is not a comprehensive free trade agreement. While the deal addresses specific goods, uncertainties remain regarding quotas, pharmaceutical treatments, and digital service taxes. More to come.
3) Crypto scammer gets locked up: Alexander Mashinsky, founder of the cryptocurrency lending platform Celsius Network, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for defrauding customers by falsely claiming their investments were safe while making risky bets with their funds. The collapse of Celsius in 2022 caused massive losses for thousands of customers, with the judge calling Mashinsky's crimes "extremely serious." No more crypto scams please!
Top WEIRD stories of the past week
1) Ever heard that New Zealand has more sheep than people? That is, in fact, true. But the humans are catching up.
2) Aside from electing a new pope, what is the Vatican up to? Whatever it is, they have the highest ratio of Bloomberg terminals per capita. Sooo trading stonks?
3) This is a good Guinness World Record! The farthest soccer throw-in ever (or football for the Brits) was recorded - 123 feet.
