Week ending August 11

Howdy

Huge bounce in the market last week after a few chaotic days. What can we expect in the week ahead? If only I knew.

World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) Job cuts spread: Job cuts, initially concentrated in the tech sector, are now spreading to various industries, including retail and finance, as companies respond to economic pressures. Intel had the biggest layoff notice though, with 15,000 staff set to leave. Mental.

2) FTX has a big bill: The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has ordered the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX (remember them?) to pay $12.7 billion to its customers, marking a significant step in the ongoing fallout from the exchange's bankruptcy. This ruling is part of broader efforts to address the financial losses suffered by customers following FTX's abrupt collapse in late 2022. Sam Bankman-Fried? Still in jail.

3) Walz, you the real VP (maybe): Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, marking a significant moment in his rapid rise within the Democratic Party as a prominent critic of Trump. Walz's selection underscores a strategic focus on the Midwest, aiming to reinforce support in key 'blue wall' states, although it has raised questions about its effectiveness in attracting swing voters, particularly in critical battlegrounds like Pennsylvania.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) Dolce & Gabbana has introduced a luxury dog perfume named "Fefe" after the co-founder's pet, featuring a 24-carat gold-plated paw print and priced at €99. Guaranteed to sell out.

2) A Brooklyn resident transformed a tree pit into a unique aquarium, housing goldfish and creating a local curiosity. Classic NYC behaviour.

3) A dog in the United States alerted its family to a house fire that was sparked by a battery, allowing them to escape safely. The twist, he caused the fire by chewing the battery!

Investment idea

What are we investing in?

There are no guarantees in investing, but one thing I can absolutely guarantee is that people are getting older. The average global population is 30 vs. 23 50 years ago. This is skewed by the fact that 14% of the global population is over 60 today, vs 8% 50 years ago.

What does this mean? Companies that service senior citizens are going to become increasingly in-demand.

So, what should we do? Profit.

You can invest in the “longevity economy”, which involves targeting companies that benefit from the aging population and the associated economic opportunities. Here are three companies or investment options that are well-positioned in this sector:

  1. Welltower Inc. (WELL): Welltower is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that specializes in senior living facilities. It is one of the top holdings in the Long-Term Care ETF (OLD), which focuses on companies involved in senior housing, nursing services, and biotech for age-related illnesses.

  2. Ventas, Inc. (VTR): Similar to Welltower, Ventas is another REIT specializing in senior living facilities. It is also a significant holding in the Long-Term Care ETF (OLD), which aims to track the performance of companies focused on the longevity economy.

  3. Global X Longevity Thematic ETF (LNGR): This ETF provides exposure to companies that enhance and lengthen the lives of senior citizens. It allocates nearly 90% of its portfolio to the healthcare sector, focusing on developed countries such as the United States, Japan, and Denmark.

History

On this day…

…in 1898, the brief and one-sided Spanish-American War came to an end when Spain formally agreed to a peace protocol on U.S. terms: the cession of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Manila in the Philippines to the United States pending a final peace treaty.
