World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) New Year’s Day Tragedies: Two tragic attacks happened on New Year’s Day in New Orleans and Las Vegas, with over a dozen people losing their lives. There are odd connections between both incidences: both suspects rented the cars used in the attacks from the app Turo and both were in the U.S. military with likely overlap serving at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

2) South Korean politics are a mess: South Korea has been going through some serious political chaos. In December their president declared martial law and was impeached…but might be reinstated? Now thousands are protesting against him and demanding his resignation over allegations of election meddling. At the same time, the leader of the main opposition party may face arrest for corruption charges. It’s a lot.

3) Musk Tweets @ The King: As if Musk didn’t have enough on his plate already, he decided to challenge the UK Prime Minister to a “cage fight” on X/Twitter and asked that King Charles dissolve the government. While it IS possible for the King to do this, it hasn’t happened in two centuries. Musk is accusing the UK government of promoting a police state and allowing some horribly violent crimes to go unpunished.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) Walter White’s house from the hit show Breaking Bad is up for sale by its owners after they got fed up with people trying to throw pizza on their roof (IYKYK). It’s on the market for $4M - steep ask!

2) Record-breaking wave ridden? Maybe. A surfer in Half Moon Bay, California rode a wave estimated to be over 100 feet tall. Guinness is yet to confirm. The video is wild.

3) You know how we love extremely dumb world records? We have a winner! An Indian man has broken the Guinness World Record for the most electric fans stopped with his tongue in one minute, managing to stop 57 fans. Why.

Investment idea

What are we investing in?

Picks and Shovels of AI

AI is probably the most exciting and important technology of our generation. It’s changing how we live and work, from improving healthcare to helping businesses run smarter. But instead of trying to pick the next big AI company, there’s another way to invest: focus on the tools and infrastructure that make AI possible.

This is called the "picks and shovels" strategy, based on the idea that during the Gold Rush, the people who made the most money were often the ones selling the tools for mining. By investing in the essentials that AI needs to grow, you can benefit from the success of the entire industry, not just one company.

Three important "picks and shovels" for AI are data centers, cloud services, and power management.

History

On this day…

…in 2021, thousands of supporters of then-President Donald Trump mobbed the U.S. Capitol in protest of the 2020 election results. Ultimately it did nothing to change the election, but did result in several deaths and over 1,200 people charged to date.
