World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) Alphabet backs Anthropic: Remember when you were a kid playing soccer and you would share your oranges at half time with the other team? Me neither. But Alphabet is basically doing that with Anthropic, investing $40 billion into the competing AI company, on top of $3 billion they’ve already invested. Why? Anthropic needs massive computing power, and Alphabet can benefit by supplying chips and cloud services. Okay I guess they know what they’re doing.

2) Altman vs. Musk: Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman heads to trial. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI (crazy!) who donated $38 million, claims Altman misled him by turning the nonprofit into a for-profit company focused on profits over public good. He seeks Altman's removal from the board, reversal to nonprofit status, and over $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft. Dramaaaaaaa.

3) Meta axes employees: Meta (the company formerly known as Facebook which took a bet on the metaverse so big that they renamed their company and then subsequently pivoted entirely) is cutting about 10% of its workforce, or roughly 8,000 jobs, while it shifts more money into AI. The company says the move is meant to make it run more efficiently as it competes in the AI race. Try renaming your company to “AI LOVERS” - that oughta do it.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) Two guys drove a three-wheeled Reliant Robin 14,000 miles from the U.K. to the southern tip of Africa. This has Top Gear written all over it.

2) Monkeys in Gibraltar have learned to eat soil to settle their stomachs from all the junk food they consume. Thanks for the tip, my brothers!

3) A hot air balloon landed in a California backyard. Does nobody else find it strange that people are still using these when they have pretty much zero method of control?
