TikTok is saved (maybe).

Interest rates cut.

Chimps are getting lit.

World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) The art of the deal: The U.S. and China have struck a framework deal allowing TikTok to keep operating in America, ending a long dispute over ownership and data privacy. About 80% of TikTok’s U.S. business will now be owned by American investors, including Oracle and Silver Lake, with a new board and domestic control of the algorithm. Oracle will manage user data in the U.S., and the deal is expected to be finalized within weeks pending government approval. Fingers crossed so m fingers can keep scrolling.

2) Rates down, vibes up: The U.S. central bank just cut rates for the first time this year. Jerome Powell, the Chair of the Federal Reserve said increasing unemployment was a main driver for the cut, lowering rates by 0.25%. Doesn’t sound like much, BUT it looks like another couple rate cuts will happen this year. That means it’ll be cheaper to borrow money. Thank GAWD, because I’ve had my eye on this.

“Watch how close together I can put my fingertips. WATCH!”

3) Visa sticker shock: President Trump’s new order imposing a $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applicants led to widespread panic among visa holders. Major tech firms like Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet told employees abroad to return immediately. After initial confusion over who would be affected, the White House clarified that existing H-1B holders are exempt and that the fee is a one-time cost per petition. You know what they say, move fast, break things…and wire the government your salary. Musk was not pleased.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) A man in British Columbia, was arrested for driving under the influence after taking a child-sized hot pink Barbie Jeep on a public road to get a Slurpee, despite his license being suspended. Come on Barbie, let’s go party straight to jail.

2) Wild chimpanzees in Uganda have been found to eat fermented fruit that delivers the equivalent of about two human “cocktails” of alcohol per day - not enough to get them drunk, but enough for a steady buzz. TIL chimps party harder than me. What’s next, they discover the devil’s lettuce??

3) Researchers won the 2025 Ig Nobel Prize in Biology for showing that painting black cows with vertical white stripes (to make them look like zebras) significantly reduces the number of biting flies landing on them. They did find, however, that lion attacks increased by 400%! (I just made that up but it’s definitely true).

Rate cuts are a big deal! So here’s a pretty picture about them.

Personal Finance

Financial Booster

With the U.S. central bank dropping rates, there are countless knock-on effects. One of the big ones is that typically this makes the U.S. dollar worth less.

When a country’s central bank lowers its interest rates, fewer international investors will want to buy the bonds that country offers (because of the lower rate they offer) so they don’t need its currency.

And the U.S. dollar has already been getting crushed this year!

It’s at a four year low against the euro (no wonder my entire Instagram feed is people’s Italy summer holidays) and is likely to keep dropping.

OMGGG WHAT DO WE DO???

Look international.

Europe is up 25% this year:

Emerging Markets are up 27% this year:

Who knows what could happen next, but if the USD keeps falling, then these two regions will benefit.
