World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) Tariffs, again: This past week, President Trump announced sweeping new tariffs set to take effect August 1. The U.S. will impose a 30% tariff on goods imported from both the EU and Mexico, and a 35% tariff on most Canadian products. Additional tariffs ranging from 20% to 50% were announced for over 20 other countries, including Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and a 50% tariff on copper imports. Trump cited trade deficits, national security, and issues like drug trafficking as reasons for the measures. Looks like extra guac is about to get even more expensive.

2) Epstein memo backlash: The Department of Justice and FBI released a memo and video footage this past week concluding that Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide, found no evidence of a “client list” or blackmail of powerful individuals, and stated that no further charges would be brought. The release, which included flight logs and evidence lists, sparked backlash from those who had expected revelations about high-profile figures. There is even suspicion that the video released had been altered. The truth is out there… just not in this memo.

3) Wimbledon win: Iga Swiatek won her first Wimbledon title in dominant fashion, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 - the first “double bagel” in a Wimbledon women’s final since 1911. This victory marks Swiatek’s sixth Grand Slam title and makes her the only active women’s player to win majors on all three surfaces. The whole match was over in just 57 minutes, which raises the question: did Iga have early dinner reservations she needed to get to? ALSO, Jannik Sinner beat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, cementing their rivalry.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) A small business owner in Oklahoma City used 1.8 million credit card points to handle tariff costs on parts shipped from China. And no, he still hasn’t earned lounge access.

2) A domestic flight in Australia was delayed after a stowaway snake was found in the cargo hold. I refuse to say it.

3) An AI generated band with two albums released now has over 500,000 monthly Spotify listeners. And let me guess, the listeners are all AI as well??

Chart

You like charts? Graphs? Ya you do

While some investors have been shifting focus toward international markets, recent performance shows the U.S. stock market (S&P 500) catching up with global indexes. The trend suggests that the rotation from U.S. to foreign assets may have been overstated - at least for now.

History

On this day…

…in 1789, the storming of the Bastille prison took place, a key moment at the start of the French Revolution. The prison was seen as a symbol of the king’s absolute power, so its fall represented the people rising up against tyranny. Today, Bastille Day is celebrated with military parades, fireworks, parties, and lots of flag-waving. Think of it as France’s version of the Fourth of July - but with more cheese and fewer hot dogs.
