World news
Top news stories of the past week
1) Trump’s ultimatum: After Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz indefinitely, President Trump said the US would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if the Strait is not reopened by Monday (today) evening. The Strait of Hormuz is super important because about 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas passes through there. Closing it down would spike oil/gas prices around the world, which is already happening.

2) Cuba in the dark: More than 10 million people have had power cut across Cuba after the country's national electrical grid collapsed for the second time in a week. The Caribbean country has suffered three major blackouts this month as a US fuel blockade cuts off foreign oil imports, required to keep power stations running. The Communist-run country has an ageing electricity infrastructure and chronic fuel shortages. For all the deal-hunters: all-inclusive resorts are on a fire-sale.

3) Gold’s roughest week in decades: Gold dropped 11% this past week, posting its biggest weekly loss since 1983. This is weird. Gold is usually what investors run to when things are uncertain, which is definitely the case now (thanks to the Iran war). So why is gold falling? Because surging energy prices are forcing central banks to delay rate cuts - a key factor that drives up the price of gold. Rappers everywhere panic…or rejoice?

Top WEIRD stories of the past week
1) Sharks off the coast of the Bahamas are carrying trace amounts of drugs - including caffeine, painkillers, and cocaine - likely due to sewage runoff and tourism-related waste. Me too, but you don’t see me bragging about it.
2) A New York City man was arrested after allegedly attempting to rob six different banks in a single week, only to walk away with a meager total of $605 across all his attempts. Crime truly doesn’t pay.
3) A viral "churn and burn" trend has runners making homemade butter by strapping bags of heavy cream to their bodies, using the natural agitation of a long-distance run to separate the fat from the liquid. I don’t know where to begin.
