Trump survives, inflation down, Boeing pays

Week ending July 14th

Quiet week, wasn’t it?

[Borat voice]: NAWT

Markets keep ripping, there was an assassination attempt on Trump, and a billionaire’s son had a wedding.

And in case you’re wondering, I was invited to that wedding, but I couldn’t find a plant-sitter.

World news

Top news stories of the past week

1) Trump almost assassinated: At a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, Trump was speaking when shots rang out from the crowd. A 20-year old man fired on the former President, hitting his ear. Scary scene, and one that provided maybe the wildest photo from modern politics:

2) Inflation keeps dropping: US consumer prices fell in June, marking the first monthly decline since the start of the pandemic. The core consumer price index also rose at a slower pace, pushing the annual inflation rate to a new three-year low. This is good news! It means central banks may want to drop rates soon.

3) Boeing pleads guilty: Boeing has agreed to plead guilty to a criminal fraud charge and pay a $244 million penalty related to the 737 Max crashes. Understandably, some victims' families oppose the plea deal lets them off a bit easy. As a company worth $112 billion, the $244 million should be easy to come up with.

Top WEIRD stories of the past week

1) Anant Ambani, the son of India's richest man, married Radhika Merchant in a lavish ceremony in Mumbai attended by thousands of guests, including celebrities like Kim Kardashian. Bieber got paid $10 million for a performance - big flex!

2) Ammunition vending machines have been installed in some grocery stores in the United States, allowing customers to purchase ammunition at any time. Is there anything more American?

3) Scientists have discovered a bejeweled ring in space, which is actually a sparkling quasar. This quasar is a massive, incredibly bright galaxy that is powered by a supermassive black hole at its center. This story gives off Interstellar vibes.

Investment idea

What are we investing in?

Wine (not just to drink).

If you’ve ever bought a bottle of wine and thought, “that was a waste of money”, me too. BUT, you could actually be making money on wine you buy.

As an asset class, wine is extremely uncorrelated with other asset classes:

There’s a few things that drive wine prices up over time:

  • Scarcity - the supply

  • Aging - wine improves with age

  • Brand equity - prestige of the brand itself

Some other benefits of investing in wine are that it’s prices are that volatile generally, and as a hard asset it’s inflation resistant.

It’s also performed quite well! Wine has outperformed the global equity index by almost 2% annually over the last 15 years.

So how do you invest? This is the hard part: buy the bottle and don’t drink it. UGH, I know.

OR, check out https://www.vinovest.co/ - this let’s you buy shares in wine and trade them to make it more…liquid. Get it? Maybe? Cheers.

History

On this day…

… in 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte surrendered, marking the end of the Napoleonic Wars and leading to Napoleon's eventual exile to Saint Helena. This subsequently led to a really boring movie with Joaquin Phoenix.
